Story Writing

What is story?
Story is a piece of writing that describes a chain of related events. Every story is about one or more characters trying to deal with some sort of difficulty.

What is a story map?
A story map is a map that helps writer organise the story by focusing on characters, setting, plot; i.e. events that starts with beginning, rising, climax and ending.

What are the eight types of plot?
Plot can be defined as the arrangement of narrative events in a story. It is usually organised in such a way as to create interest and involvement for the reader. It also helps to establish and emphasise causality. There are usually eight types of plot mapped by writer to devise the sequence of events in the story.

They can arrange from:

  1. problem to solution
  2. mystery to solution
  3. conflict to peace
  4. danger to safety
  5. confusion to order
  6. dilemma to decision
  7. ignorance to knowledge
  8. questions to answers

Reading fast can also help to increase your comprehension if you can fulfill the following conditions.
  1. Read the material that meet your level of language proficiency.
  2. Read and never lose your wonder in seeking meaning. Read with a purpose, follow the argument/s or story plot/s not the details.
  3. Have fun in reading, time your reading if you have a clock around. By reading faster, one can make the reading process more challenging. Reading fast can also keep you awake because you must concentrate more.
  4. Use a pencil tip to help your eyes scan the text in phrases, and always move forward as fast as as possible.
  5. Speed up your reading by practise reading, reading, and reading. Progressively learn to see and comprehend more and more words ( i.e. from 3 to 10 words) at a time.

A Recent Study on Literacy Warning

Today, I read a newspaper article with the title, "Study sends literacy warning". There are three interesting points mentioned in the article.

  1. Time spent on the internet, playing computer games and sending messages through mobile phones and computers has an adverse affect on students' reading and writting skills.
  2. The reading performance of students taught in the classroom is better than those who have private tutorial help.
  3. Private tutoring reduces students' time for reading. it does not improve the reading performance of children, in fact, it makes their performance worse.
